Wain’s works transformed society’s view of cats in the late 19th century - promoting them from practical pest control experts to cherished companions. His impact is readily apparent to this day, as cats are beloved family members, dominate the internet, and cat cafes abound. Just as significantly, his increasingly vivid and surreal depictions of cats inadvertently helped pioneer the psychedelic art genre, years before psychedelics were a part of Western culture.
With Wain as their muse, 40+ artists have created more than 60 works as a tribute to his enduring influence. These include felted wool dolls, ceramic sculptures, stained glass, mosaics, paintings, and drawings - a multi-media homage to the variety of styles Wain explored over the years. These works have been herded to Denver from ten countries across four continents to hang alongside the original Wains at Threyda Gallery.
