~Lucky Mutt Strut a Great Success Thanks to YOU!

The 2013 Lucky Mutt Strut was a GREAT success, thanks to all the wonderful participants, sponsors, vendors, and donors! Colorado gave us perhaps the best spring day we've had so far this year, and people and dogs turned out in force to enjoy the fun at Cheesman Park! Rock Bottom Brewery grilled up their famous brats & burgers, Cool Beans fueled us with delicious coffee, and Good Times Burgers made sure the dogs were refreshed and energized with delicious Paw Benders canine ice cream!

For everyone who registered and walked/ran for the dogs and cats of MaxFund, a HUGE thank you! We are so grateful for your support of our no-kill mission. And much gratitude for the support of the business community. We couldn't have done it without you! Please view the complete list of sponsors, vendors, and donors here. These great businesses deserve our support for their generosity on behalf of homeless dogs and cats!

And BIG thanks to our wonderful volunteers, who gave their time and energy to setting up, running, and cleaning up after the event! GREAT job, everyone!

So what's next? Well, Pars for Pets is tomorrow (Monday, June 13)! Also, starting tomorrow, we'll be participating in Purina's "50 Years, 50 Shelters" month-long event. We're honored to have been chosen as Colorado's only participating shelter for 2013, and with your help, we have the opportunity to win some great financial support from Purina. We have lots of other fun events going on through the summer, too, so please stay tuned right here!

~Pars For Pets: Thank You, Delectable Egg and Participating Golfers!!

17 foursomes participated on May 13 in Pars for Pets, a golf tournament benefiting MaxFund. The fabulous Common Ground golf course in Aurora was the site of this great event. We so appreciate all the golfers who participated in this event!

The event was organized and conducted by the wonderful Patrick Schaetzle of the Delectable Egg DTC. Patrick, we are SO grateful for the time and resources you devoted to putting on this event.The Delectable Egg has been a Denver breakfast and lunch tradition since 1982, and we hope all MaxFriends will head over to one of the Delectable Egg's five locations for a great meal and to say "Thanks for supporting the homeless animals at MaxFund!"

~Jack and Chico: The Rest of Their Story Updated 4-4-2013

Editor's note: Please consider making a donation to Jack and Chico's Seeing Eye Fund. Jack and Chico want to "pay it forward" by helping other dogs at MaxFund with vision problems!

You’ll remember Jack and Chico, the middle-aged cattle dogs who came to MaxFund in search of a new and forever home. They spent several months at MaxFund because they needed to be adopted together. Chico has no eyes, and he relies on Jack, his best buddy, to serve as his seeing eye dog. After some wonderful publicity, a lovely family adopted them, and they are living a great life together in their new home!

Because of the circumstances of their arrival at MaxFund, very little was known about Jack and Chico’s previous life together. Now, a close friend of Jack and Chico’s former guardian has come forward to fill in some of the blanks. We are so grateful to her for telling us the story of Jack and Chico. We’re holding aside some of the details to maintain privacy.

Jack and Chico’s previous guardian, M___, went to the doctor one day for a sore hip. Shockingly, the diagnosis was advanced cancer, and M___ passed away in hospice a month later, never seeing her beloved Jack and Chico again. Her primary concern throughout her ordeal was Jack and Chico’s welfare, as she had been devoted to them. Her friend cared for Jack and Chico until M___ passed away.

Jack had been with M___ since puppyhood. Some years ago, after Jack’s other good buddy passed away, M___ found Chico’s photos on the website of another animal shelter. She thought it was cute that both of his eyes seemed to be closed in all of the photos! But when M___ visited Chico, she discovered he actually had no eyes.

Chico had ended up at the shelter because he’d had a serious eye infection that his previous owners left untreated. The shelter refused the owners’ request to euthanize him. Chico received treatment at the shelter, but the infection had progressed too far to save his eyes. M___, though, saw past his disability and looked straight into the heart of this sweet, smart, brave, cuddly boy. She fell in love with him instantly and adopted him.

Jack and Chico were inseparable. Whenever Jack would hear something outside, he would tear through the house and go barreling out the doggie door. Chico was a smart boy who’d quickly learned to use the doggie door with the help of a few hot dog treats! So he would always be hot on the heels of his buddy Jack. Once outside, they would explore the yard together, Jack in the lead and Chico right behind them. Jack and Chico also loved to take walks with M___. M___ would wear a bell on her belt to help Chico maintain his bearings.

So the story of Jack and Chico is a sad and happy one. It’s sad that Chico had such a terrible start, and lost his eyes. But how wonderful that he and Jack and M___ found each other and had a great life together. And it’s tragic that Jack and Chico lost their beloved M___ so suddenly. But thank goodness they ended up in the care of MaxFund, who promised to find them a new and forever home together! And, with the support of the media and all of the kind people around the country who sent their prayers and good wishes, that’s exactly what happened.

As M___’s friend told us, “”M___ would be blown away by all this!”

Huge thanks to M___’s friend for coming forward and filling in the blanks on Jack and Chico’s story, and for loving and caring for them during M___’s ordeal. We would like to think that M___ is looking down on Jack and Chico with a big smile on her face, and the peace of knowing that they are still living a happy life together.

~Mister: A Cat’s Happy Adoption Story

Mister is a sweet young cat who's had quite an eventful month! He was surrendered to MaxFund a few weeks ago, but was quickly adopted by a new and loving person. His new family wrote in to tell us about his new life, and we wanted to share his story with you. This is why we at MaxFund do what we do!

"Thanks for all your help getting my husband's grandmother set up with her wonderful cat. You'll remember that we picked him up Saturday in the snowstorm and took him home to Grandma. He explored all around right away and didn't seem overly scared or freaked out. We showed him his litter box several times but he didn't want to use it right then. Since then he's been using it just fine, however. My daughter and her friend used some Museum Putty to anchor down some of the knick-knacks that might otherwise get knocked down. He's a climber, and went right from the counter to the fridge to the top of the cabinets where there were a lot of decorative plates. The museum putty worked like a charm on those.

Within about 20-30 minutes Mister was eating and drinking from some very cute little blue dishes with pawprints that Grandma had bought at the thrift store. He stretched out on the kitchen floor afterward and seemed very relaxed!

We've been checking in with Grandma for updates and she goes on and on about him. He follows her *everywhere.* Really. If she gets up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night he follows her there, and then back to the bed. He sleeps on her feet, which she appreciates because it keeps them nice and warm. She talks to him all day long. If he's off exploring in another room (not a big apartment) and she calls him, he comes running. He does seem to know his name. She brushes him and he likes that although he also likes to chew on the brush...

Since then we've been over there a couple of times and he acts like he owns the place. Grandma keeps saying 'you just couldn't ask for a better cat' and she likes to tell everyone the story of how they picked each other out.

Just wanted you to know he went to a very good home where he's the center of attention and living like a king. Thanks again for all your help and the work you do every day."

The Delectable Egg DTC is putting on a golf tournament fundraiser for MaxFund on Monday, May 13, 2013! The tournament will be held at the wonderful Common Ground Golf Course,10300 East Golfers Way Aurora CO 80010.

This perk-filled day promises to be huge fun, and all proceeds will benefit the dogs and cats of MaxFund!

Your $100/person, $400/foursome fee will enter you into the tournament. You'll also get breakfast at Delectable Egg DTC (9:00-11:00 a.m.), AND an Italian buffet lunch at the Common Ground Clubhouse (after the tournament)! The fee will also cover parking, a golf cart, and unlimited range balls until the tournament begins with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start (check in noon-12:45 p.m.).

But wait, there's more! Each hole on the course will be sponsored by a different company. There will be mulligans available for purchase at the first hole before the shotgun start. During lunch, prizes will be awarded for lowest score, lowest team score and for whoever finishes with the "egg". There will also be a small silent auction during the event in the Common Ground Clubhouse with ten fabulous items available for bidding!

~Lucky Dog Art Show Benefit RESCHEDULED to Friday, March 15!

Lucky Dog Art Show Benefit for MaxFund March 15

On Friday, March 15, 2013, the Lucky Dog Art Show for MaxFund will be taking place from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The location is Wazee Union, 3501 Wazee St., Denver, CO 80216.

(Please note that the event has been RESCHEDULED from the original date of 3-9 due to the snowstorm.)

11 talented local and national artists are being asked to create a “gig poster” for the Lucky Dog Art Show. Limited edition posters and postcard sets of the works submitted by the artists will be sold at the Art Show. Proceeds will benefit MaxFund! You can read more about the event here.

Here’s your chance to pick up some great works by some of the most talented artists in Denver, and help out the homeless animals who have made their way to MaxFund! There will be music and entertainment, too, including performances by aerialist Art Du Vol! Refreshments will be available from the “Pink Tank” food truck. Admission is free!

You may remember the story of Jack and Chico that we posted here. We were very happy that they recently had the opportunity to appear on 9News. You can read the 9News piece (and view the video) here.

Here's a photo of them taken Sunday, March 9, by MaxFund volunteer Gisela. Chico has snow on his nose!

Jack and Chico lost their home when their human tragically passed away. Although they're pleased to be at MaxFund, what they really want is a new forever home together. Chico has no eyes, but gets around well with the help of Jack, his seeing eye dog! They are sweet and well-behaved boys who deserve a happy retirement together.

We previously introduced you to Yoda here. He's still looking for his very special foster home, but as you can see, he's very optimistic about finding it. As a foster dog, all of his medical needs will be covered by MaxFund. MaxFund will also be happy to provide continuing consultation regarding the quirks that make him such a unique and interesting little guy!
